District 1 Madness Recaps:
Single A Girls Final: Sacred Heart 36 Girard College 28
The story of this game were the 32 turnovers Girard committed compared to only 10 by Sacred Heart. Many of the turnovers were unforced errors. Girard looked nervous at times and Sacred Heart seemed loose, which may have been a product of the #4 seed feeling like they were pulling things together at just the right time. “We wanted to be competitive in our league [this year],” Sacred Heart coach Zach Shuler said after the game. “We knew that would prepare us for moments like this.” Sacred Heart got great productivity from the three point line, scoring 21 of their 36 points from beyond the arc. Annie O’ Donnell contributed 4 of those three pointers for all of her team-leading 12 points. Girard, trailing by 1 at halftime, came out strong in the second half. This was attributed to the efforts of Sharae McCottry (12 points, 6 rebounds) and Shaniqua Faarlow (7 points, 12 rebounds). But Sacred Heart held on and prevailed, thanks in large part to capitalizing on Girard's turnovers, and O’Donnell netting 9 points in the half. “I knew I had to get the team points in the second half,” she said after the game. “The guards driving in and kicking out helped a lot.”
