| Interview with West Catholic Coach Brian Fluck
Marcus Wright The West Catholic Burrs football team went 11-1 this past season, with a 7-0 record in the Catholic League Blue and 11 straight wins after losing their opening game against Roman Catholic. They capped the season off with a 28-7 win over Archbishop Wood that earned them their second consecutive Catholic League Blue title. The team, full of talented and fast players, were led by coach Brian Fluck, and I got a chance to ask him a few questions about the great season for the Burrs. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ MW: Congratulations on winning the Catholic League Blue 2007 championship. What do you believe was the primary thing you focused on through the year that guided your team to the championship? BF: As a team, we knew we had the talent to win every game and of course the championship, but the biggest focus was keeping the team doing the little things right and not cut corners. Also playing every game like it was your last and not taking any team lightly. MW: Talk about the game against Archbishop Wood. How were you guys able to get the impressive 28-7 victory? BF: After playing Wood in the regular season and not playing well in the first half of the game, we believed that we needed to step up our run defense and not give up a big pass play in our secondary. On offense, we just needed to execute our plays and play all four quarters. MW: Do you feel like there was a turning point during the season where you guys figured, "Hey, we can (or should) go all the way"? BF: From the beginning of the season we knew this team could be special, but we didn't play well in our opening game down the shore versus Roman Catholic. That game was a gut check for our team to step up the rest of the season and show the people around the area that we were one of the best teams. The following weeks of games speak for themselves. To their credit, the team met the challenge I put out for them. MW: You have a lot of talent on your team, but who would you classify as the key players not just for what they did on the field, but off the field as well? BF: I think the greatest thing about our team is that the team is so close to each other and nobody is the center of attraction when they are together. They stick together like our motto on the back of our t-shirts which is FAMILY. That's what West Catholic Football is all about, and yes we do have some key standout players, but they do not stand out more than the West Catholic Family and I believe they are ok with that. So I don't want to just talk about a couple of players, but the Team is special. I love that we have players reach their individual goals and get recruited high, but I love that they put the team goals in front of their own goals. MW: You guys have been very successful throughout the years. How have you been able to maintain such a high standard of excellence in high school football? BF: We try to maintain a high standard of excellence by the hardwork of our coaches and players in the offseason weightlifting and conditioning sessions. Plus, the summer workouts and the three-a-day practice we have in August all help us to keep focus and execute well. I also believe bringing kids in that are about the team and of course have some talent and work ethic. MW: Having had so much success, is there anything that you feel like you want to work on as a coach and figurehead? BF: As a coach you are always trying to make your team better by finding what works to motivate your kids. I always try to put my team in positions to win games. You also want to have your senior players leave your program with something to remember. That's what motivates me to keep on working hard and find what offense and defensive plays and systems works for the team in any given year. MW: What possibilities does next year's realignment of the entire Catholic League open up for West Catholic football? BF: I think that we have a good opportunity now to compete for a catholic, city(district), and state championship. This opportunity can help us show the state how West Catholic football and Catholic League football plays. We can represent the Catholic League and the City of Philadelphia in the states. This opportunity is exciting for my team and West Catholic as a school to show that we are one of the best teams in the state. I need to work even harder to make this dream happen for my team, coaches and school! MW: Thank you very much for your time, and best wishes to you. |
