District 1 Madness Recaps:
AAA Girls Championship: Villa Maria 49 Mount St. Joseph 34
Villa Maria raced out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Mount St. Joseph was unable to score until the 3:30 mark of the first. Villa Maria gave Mount St. Joseph fits, hitting four three pointers in the first half, which led to a 26-7 lead going into the break. Mount St. Joseph came alive in the third quarter with an 8-0 run to make it a 26-15 game. It was at this point where Erin Man (13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) took it upon herself to carry the team. At one point, she scored 7 straight Villa Maria points to make it a 35-18 game. “We had to put the pedal to the metal,” she said in reference to how Villa Maria was able to keep Mount St. Joseph’s at bay. And after having had some troubles with Mount St. Joseph in the past, Villa Maria got to taste the sweet nectar of victory and hoist the championship trophy. “It feels great,” Mann said. “It’s amazing.”
