District 1 Madness Recaps:
AAA Girls Championship: Villa Maria 49 Mount St. Joseph 34
Villa Maria raced out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter
and never looked back. The Hurricanes played exceptional defense in the first half as a whole, not allowing Mount St. Joseph to score until the 3:30 mark of the first period. They complemented the strong defensive effort with four three pointers in the first half, which helped pad the lead to 26-7 going into halftime. Mount St. Joseph
came alive in the third quarter with an 8-0 run to make it a 26-15 game. It was at this point where Villa Maria's Erin Mann (13
points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) took it upon herself to carry the team. At one point, she scored 7 straight Hurricane points to make it a 35-18 game. “We
had to put the pedal to the metal,” she said in reference to how Villa Maria
was able to keep the Magic at bay. And after having had some troubles with Mount St.
Joseph this season, Villa Maria got to taste the
sweet nectar of victory and hoist the championship trophy. “It feels great,” Mann said. “It’s amazing.”
