District 1 Madness Recaps:

AAAA Girls Championship: Downingtown East 41  Methacton 39

This was perhaps the most physical and scrappiest game of the tournament.  Both teams had trouble shooting in the first quarter, with a few airballs between them as a testament to possibly a mix of nerves and good defense.  Renee Womack (15 points) set the tone for Methacton early by going strong to the hole and knocking down her shots.  The two teams battered each other throughout the first half, and every point was well earned.  Neither team got a lead higher than 4 points, as they went into half time tied at 18.

In the second half, Downingtown East was able to get the biggest lead of the game at 29-24 to end the third quarter.  The fourth quarter was a back and fourth bonanza, with Kristen Blye (18 points, 6 rebounds) coming up big for Downingtown East, and Womack continuing to play hard for Methacton.  Also hitting key shots was Leann Randell down the stretch, including nailing a three pointer with under 2 seconds left to make it a 40-39 game.  Downingtown East’s Meghan Kerrigan was then fouled with 1.2 seconds to go.  She hit one of two from the line to end the game, hand Methacton their first loss of the season, and grant Downingtown East the AAAA girls championship.

“We played team defense, tried to outhustle, and worked the ball around,” Blye said after the game in reference to the intangibles that led to the victory.

The game was a crowd pleaser for all in attendance, and there’s a chance these two could meet in the state finals.  But first things first – these teams have to go through the tournament.  And if they can match the grit they showed on Sunday, we may get to see a postseason sequel between these two titans.
