Varsity 365 Showstopper: Tanaya Lloyd of Girard College Track & Field About 2 weeks ago, we put up our first Coach Conversation, which put the spotlight on Girard College Track and Field coach Richard Leek. So it is only fitting that our first Showstopper is one of his and assistant coach Atiya Harmon's athletes, senior Tanaya Lloyd. What brings Lloyd to center stage is her outstanding performance at the PTFCA Indoor State Championships on March 1st, where she became the State Champion in the long jump with an 18' 4.25" jump. Lloyd also placed 7th in the triple jump (36' 6.75"). What is even more impressive is that she accomplished this while nursing a hamstring injury. Varsity 365 caught up with the North Philadelphia native, whom is still deciding which college to go to (her top choices are Penn State, Duke, and UNC). V365: How does it feel to be a State Champion? Has it even hit you yet? What does it mean to you? TL: Being the State Champion hasn't really hit me yet. I still can't believe I won. It feels great though. Being State Champion now has put a whole new pressure on me as an athlete and as team captain. I have people on the team who actually look up to me now. I want this to be the example that anything is possible. V365: Talk about how it felt before taking the winning jump. TL: Coming into the meet I didn't expect to place at all. This was the first time I've done anything since December due to a hamstring injury. All I wanted to do was advance to the finals, winning states never crossed my mind. When I took the winning jump I was very excited because it was farther than my best jump ever and it put me in the lead. V365: You were going through some injury problems throughout the year. How were you able to overcome that? TL: Honestly, all I did was rest and stretch like the therapist and my coaches had been telling me. I didn't know what to expect on Saturday. All I could do was hope for the best. V365: What and who are the biggest influences in your life and your track career? TL: The biggest influence in my life is my mom, because she's always there for me and she tries to steer me in the right direction. The biggest influences on my track career are my coaches, Coach Leek and Coach Harmon. They believe in me more than I believe in myself, and they've continued to work with me and develop me into the athlete that I am now. My teammates also are a big influence because they are the people that I try to be a good role model for and set a good example to. V365:What things would you like to work on going into the outdoor season? TL: I would like to work on the techniques for both the long and the triple and also gaining more speed for the 200 and 400 meters.
