Burrs Run Past Vikings
West Catholic's explosive offense comes from 10 down for big win

Charles Martin Memorial Stadium, Philadelphia PA
- It was yet another rainy Friday night in the Varsity Football season, albeit only a misty one. So the conditions were not too bad for a rematch of last year's final Catholic League Blue championship between Archbishop Wood and West Catholic. While these teams are no longer in the same division, they're still extremely competitive against each other, as shown in Friday's game. On this night, the Burrs were able to outmatch their old division foes with a 28-17 victory.

The Vikings had the right idea in the first quarter - keep West Catholic's powerful offense off of the field. Wood's first drive consisted of ground and pound, and chewed up almost 10 minutes of clock before ending in a field goal. When Wood got the ball back in the second quarter, they added to their lead with a 43 yard touchdown from senior quarterback Sean McCartney to senior receiver Vince Furlong. The Vikings were off to a 10-0 lead and seemed poised to get their revenge.

But then that whole powerful West Catholic offense thing happened.

The Burrs finally got on the board in the second quarter thanks to a 19 yard touchdown run on a draw from senior quarterback Curtis Drake. They then went up 13-10 near halftime thanks to a 2 yard touchdown run by senior running back Rob Hollomon. While the Burrs started finding their offensive groove, Wood was unable to retain theirs. The drop off in Wood's offensive production was coupled with an increase in West's ground production, with 2 more rushing touchdowns added to the total (1 from senior back Raymond Maples and one more from Hollomon).

The Vikings were able to add on one more touchdown toward the end of the game, but it came too late. West Catholic improved to 4-1 and continue on with their championship aspirations. While Archbishop Wood did not look bad, they know that they have to work on a few more things to get ready for the postseason push. There's plenty of season left, so we'll see how things shape up for these two contenders.

MW Notes: The rain wasn't that bad at all, unfortunately it seemed to keep the fans from coming. Not many West fans were there at all, while Wood had a decent sized crowd show up. Hopefully this lack of attendance was only due to the weather... Wood QB Sean McCartney is a great athlete, running QB draws when called and slinging nice passes when needed... There's so much to say about the Big Three of West Catholic (Curtis Drake, Raymond Maples, and Rob Hollomon) but I'll just say this one thing: they sure are fun to watch.
