Fast Break: West Catholic used a 10-3 run in the beginning of the fourth quarter and outscored Conwell-Egan 20-12 in the final frame to pull out a 61-52 victory over the Eagles. The Burrs were led in scoring by Rob Hollomon, who had 19 points, Haleem Hayward, who had 11, and Brandon Hollomon, who had 10. Conwell-Egan was led by Isaac Robinson, who had 16 points, and Jonas Skovdal, who had 13. The game was a back and forth affair until West Catholic was able to pull off the strong finish.
3 Pointer:
- Conwell-Egan played a spirited game. They had success getting the ball to the basket, especially Robinson and Skovdal. Robinson carried the Eagles in the first half with 11 points, and Skovdal picked up the pace in the 2nd half with 9 points (once going on a 5-0 personal run). Guard Shayne Bonner also hustled a great bit for the Eagles.
- West Catholic forced turnovers and were quicker to the ball in the fourth quarter, which was the key to their run. Conwell Egan’s shots also ended up falling short in this quarter, which may have been a sign of fatigue. A good move by West in the second quarter: they put tougher pressure on Egan’s ballhandlers on the perimeter to try to keep them from getting inside so easily. While Egan still got to the basket, it was a lot tougher. This could explain why it seemed like the Eagles seemed a little worn by the fourth quarter, which may have been the catalyst for West’s run.
- West was successful offensively inside and out, hitting a couple of threes early in the game, and then getting in the paint as the game progressed. They showed a good amount of offensive versatility.
Free Throw:
Isaac Robinson played about as hard as I’ve seen so far this year. He was fearless to the basket and put up a few threes as well. He was also a presence on defense and the boards. As for West, good games from Hayward and Ade Barek (9 points), who provided good presence in the post, and Brandon Hollomon, who smartly helped work the ball around and provided points when needed.
Quotes:
"We had to play better defense on [Skovdal] and [Robinson]. We came out in the second half and played better all around defense."
West Catholic’s Haleem Hayward on how West was able to eventually pull the game out.
"We’re real athletic and put on good ball pressure. We just need to work on our spacing and getting the offense going."
West’s Brandon Hollomon’s assessment of the team right now.
Beyond the Arc:
There weren’t many in attendance for what turned out to be a solid game; maybe it was the Friday night thing, but the game was early enough (6:30) so I’m not sure why more people didn’t come… The last meeting between the two was a double overtime game that Conwell-Egan won, so West was able to get their revenge on their home court... Only two games this week, next week we'll have two as well, including a Sunday game. Hey, no football, no problem.
