GA For 3!
Germantown Academy wins third straight league title with win over CHA
by Marcus Wright

Philadelphia, PA -

Fast Break:
The Germantown Academy Patriots defeated the Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils 53-28 at their gym to claim a third consecutive Inter-Ac Championship (second outright).  Jack McDonnell and Cameron Ayers led GA with 14 points each, and Gary Lawrence led CHA with 15 points.  GA began to distance themselves in the game with an 8-0 run in the final few minutes of the first half to make it 21-11, and never looked back.

3 Pointer:

1. Germantown Academy may have the best pound-for-pound defense I’ve seen in the area this year, and it was on display in full force Tuesday afternoon.  They played man, and CHA was just unable to do anything.  They only allowed 13 points in the 1st half and made life completely tough for CHA’s leading scorer, Gary Lawrence (who had 15 points, but none of them came easy, as GA traded off between solid man defense on him and terrific help defense whenever he drove).

2. Dean Melchionni did all of the little things in this game.  Blocks, poking the ball away on defense, making key baskets (finished with 12 points); he just had a great all around game.  When Jeff Holton picked up his second foul early in the first quarter (and didn’t play for the rest of the half)  Melchionni picked up the slack in being the main defender on Lawrence and the main presence in the middle.

3. One really big difference between this game and the meeting earlier this season between these two teams was that CHA was unable to get more people involved in the second half.  Much like the first game, only three Blue Devils scored in the first half.  But unlike the second game, only one additional player contributed in the second half.  Shots were just not falling for the Blue Devils.  With the other players unable to score, GA keyed in on Lawrence to contain him. Another big difference was GA playing aggressively in the second half and taking the ball to the basket, getting fouled and going to the free throw line many times along the way.

Free Throw:  Germantown Academy really wanted this game.  The fire they showed as they pulled away was quite the site; the sign of a team on someone else’s home court that just flat out wanted to prove a point.   I do believe that the stinging 1 point loss they suffered to CHA at home earlier this year had to be at least a little bit of motivation (that and the whole league championship thing...). It was a very physical game for the most part and flat out intense.

Quotes:
“Anytime you play a Bill Dooley team and you win, you feel fortunate.”
GA Coach Jim Fenerty, paying respect to his CHA counterpart

“For these seniors to win three in a row, I feel so proud of them.”
- Fenerty on what winning this year’s Inter-Ac championship means

“We knew they were going to play hard and we were in a hostile environment.  We just came out and wanted it more.  We knew we wanted this championship, and we played hard and had fun.”
- Dean Melchionni after the game, on how GA was able to push to victory

Beyond the Arc:
Chestnut Hill Academy’s gym was full and at standing room only for the rivalry game; both student sections were great; I have to give kudos to the CHA students for chanting and cheering the whole game even though their team was down... now on to Indoor Track and Field this weekend!
