Carroll Pulls Off a Shocker
Defeat Neumann-Goretti for the first time since 2001 to advance in the State tournament

Philadelphia, PA-

Fast Break
– The Archbishop Carroll Patriots defeated the Neumann-Goretti Saints 70-65 at Archbishop Ryan high school in the 3rd round of the AAA state tournament Friday night.  Carroll was led in scoring by guard DJ Irving, who had 26 points.  Juan’ya Green had 16, and Andre Wilburn chipped in 14.  Neumann-Goretti was led by guard Tony Chennault with 23 points.  Big men Andre Gillette and Daniel Stewart were the next leading scorers, with 14 and 11 respectively.  This is the first time Archbishop Carroll has defeated Neumann-Goretti in 19 tries (with the last win coming in 2001). The Patriots go on to play York-Suburban Tuesday (site to be determined) for the right to go to Penn State to play for the AAA State Championship.

Three Pointer:

1. Archbishop Carroll’s defense was really good in this game.  They were great at helping each other, and also used their arms and hands well to affect Neumann-Goretti’s shots (whether they got the blocks or not).  The Saints had problems shooting the entire game mainly because of this.  In the first half, Carroll kept Neumann-Goretti out of the box, and with the outside shots not falling, the game stayed close.  In previous games we’ve covered with the Saints, they had been able to get inside at will (whether through the guards driving, or the ball being passed down there) and jump out to big leads.

2.  Neuman-Goretti was able to work the ball inside offensively in the fourth quarter.  I’m not sure if this was a conscious commitment or if the fact that they were trailing made them attack the inside instinctively.  Tony Chennault was a key figure with this and he played a hand in the Saints almost pulling out a victory.  Andre Gillette and Daniel Stewart got their shots in there too.  The big problem came at the free throw line, where the Saints ended up missing 7 times in the fourth quarter.

3. It was not just the defense, but also the aggressive offensive scheme of the Patriots that granted them the victory.  DJ Irving played his heart out; he’s very quick and can change direction in a split second, which makes it hard to defend him.  Juan’ya Green only had 2 points in the first half, but raised that total to 16 by game’s end.  He also hit a few key free throws in the final frame.  Wilburn helped pick up the slack in the first half with 10 points, while Ben Mingledough had 9 in the second half (11 for the game).  They all really took it to the heart of Neumann-Goretti’s defense, and made that extra pass to find a more open guy throughout the game.  There was a stretch in the beginning and middle part of the 4th quarter where it looked like the team was being a little conservative, and the Saints made a comeback because of that.  The Patriots were able to get back on track and hold on for the victory.

Free Throw:  Andre Gillette played a great game offensively and defensively for the Saints…  DJ Irving made a long, and I mean long buzzer beating 3 pointer from beyond half court at the end of the third quarter;  he was just a thorn in the Saints’ side the entire game…

Beyond the Arc:
As soon as I saw the article on Philly.com that noted that Archbishop Carroll had lost to Neumann-Goretti 18 straight times, I thought that there was a good chance for an upset.  I mainly felt that way because of some of the other upsets that have happened in this State tournament, and also because it’s hard to beat a team 3 times in one season.  Carroll wanted this game from the start, and so did their fans.  Talent+Hunger=Victories.

Quotes:

“It’s great.  I still can’t believe it.  It’s a good feeling right now.  But we still got 2 games left, so we can’t be too happy right now.”
- Archbishop Carroll’s DJ Irving, on how it felt to knock off Neumann-Goretti

“I knew it was going to go in when it left my hand, because I did it before when I was a freshman.”
- Irving, on how he felt about that long buzzer beating 3 point shot to end the 3rd quarter

“[We] played defense.  [We] played hard.  The first 2 games [against Neumann-Goretti] we didn’t play as hard or played as good on defense as we did this game.  Everybody wanted that game.”
- Carroll’s Andre Wilburn, on how they were able to get the victory
