Last year, we decided the Power Team of the Year based on who finished #1 in our ongoing rankings, which only included teams that we covered. This year, we did not do the rankings, but we still kept an eye on all of the teams we covered this year so that we could pick a Power Team of the Year.
Even without the rankings, there was one team that would have probably kept the number 1 spot all year, and that was the Catholic League/District 12 champion Neumann-Goretti Saints. Winners of last year's Power Team of the Year award, the Saints came into this new season with a talented squad once again full of next-level athletes. They finished the regular season undefeated in league play, and only lost one time this year - to a team highly regarded as the best in the nation (Yates High in Houston).
But perhaps the biggest thing the Saints achieved this year can't be found in the record books.
The sting of being ousted in the State playoffs last year by league foe Archbishop Carroll seemed to give the Saints a rougher edge this year. Watching them in action, they just looked more focused than last year, and as sharp as ever. As we write this, we do not know if a State title is in the cards (semifinal game tonight against Eastern York, and since we're all about the Philly area, we wish the Saints luck). But we do know that not only did they have quite the talent this year, they had quite the drive as well. For their fantastic performance in the games we covered and throughout the 2010 basketball season, Neumann-Goretti once again wins Varsity 365 Power Team of the Year honors.
